Freshwater Fish for Sale

Freshwater fish at The Ocean Floor represents the largest section of the store. We have 10,000 gallons in 160 tanks containing fish for sale and over 5,000 gallons of display only.

There is a pond built into the middle of the floor. A 3,000 square foot section of the store is called the “Tropical Fish Room”. But it makes sense that freshwater fish would comprise a large percentage of our store.

Not only are there more species and selection in that category, but there is also a larger number of fish keepers devoted to keeping freshwater environments. The worldwide ratio of freshwater to saltwater volumes leans heavily toward the salt.

Yet, the actual areas where aquarium-suitable species are found are not that different in total size.

Additional Information on Freshwater Fish

The vast majority of freshwater fish commonly kept in aquariums are warm water or Tropical. There are also Coldwater or Moderate species. Some species require temperatures higher than Tropical.

To understand this division better, it helps to understand where freshwater fish are found. The Tropical Zone is the area immediately on both sides of the equator between the Tropic of Cancer (longitude 23.5° north), and the Tropic of Capricorn (longitude 23.5° south).

The Moderate or Temperate zones are then found between those Tropic lines and the Arctic and Antarctic Circle lines (longitudes 66.5° north and south respectively).

It is important to note, however, that there are pockets of temperate climates due to altitude within the Tropical Zone, but species found in these zones are extremely uncommon in the aquarium trade.
